What’s covered under the Common Assessment Standard?

The CAS is made up of ten sections, including:

Identity

The Identity section of the Common Assessment Standard ensures that contractors are verified and meet legal requirements for business operations. This includes confirming your company’s registration details, legal status, and compliance with the relevant corporate governance practices. Having a verified identity builds trust with clients and simplifies the pre-qualification process.

Financial

The Financial section focuses on the stability and financial health of your business. It involves evaluating your company’s financial performance and making sure you have the resources to complete projects successfully. Demonstrating strong financial standing reduces risk for clients and enhances your company’s reputation in the industry.

Corporate and Professional Standing

This section assesses the legitimacy and reputation of your business, confirming that your company meets professional standards and has no history of unethical conduct or non-compliance. It’s designed to build credibility and show that you operate with integrity, providing clients with the confidence to work with your company.

Health & Safety

Health & Safety compliance is a critical requirement in construction. This section examines your business’ Health & Safety policies, procedures, and performance. Holding accreditation in this area demonstrates your commitment to maintaining a safe working environment, reducing accidents, and ensuring compliance with legal requirements.

Environmental

The Environmental section ensures that your business follows responsible environmental practices. This includes waste management, pollution prevention, and sustainability initiatives.

Quality

The Quality section focuses on your ability to deliver projects that meet client expectations. It evaluates your quality management system, ensuring you have processes in place to maintain high standards. Demonstrating quality assurance in your operations builds client confidence and contributes to successful project outcomes.

Equality

The Equality section ensures that your business promotes inclusivity and diversity in its workforce and operations. This covers compliance with equality laws and the adoption of fair practices across hiring, promotion, and workplace policies.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) evaluates your organization’s impact on society and your commitment to ethical operations. This includes how you manage relationships with employees, communities, and the environment.

Information Security

Information Security covers the protection of sensitive business and client data. This section evaluates how your company manages data security risks, prevents unauthorised access, and ensures compliance with information security regulations.

Information Management (IM)

The Information Management section assesses how effectively your company manages project-related information, including document control, data storage, and communication protocols. Proper information management ensures transparency, accountability, and efficient project delivery, helping you maintain compliance and deliver quality results.

Procurement Policy Note (PPN) 03/23

The government’s procurement office released Procurement Policy Note (PPN) 03/23 which mandates that on all public sector contracts PAS 91 (Smas Worksafe Plus) or the Common Assessment Standard (Smas Worksafe Pro) is to be used as the pre-qualification route.

The changes made were a response to the calls from many organisations in the construction industry for recognition of a standardised selection questionnaire. Need to know if the PPN changes apply to you
