What will you learn?

At the end of the Site Management Safety Training Refresher (SMSTS-R) course, you’ll understand:

  • Your vital role in implementing and adhering to Health & Safety law
  • Best practices to assess and mitigate risk
  • The importance of conducting thorough site inductions to make sure everyone is briefed on safety protocols
  • How you’re responsible for intervening in instances of unsafe practices and safeguarding the wellbeing of your team
  • To monitor site activities diligently and identify potential safety hazards

The exam made up of 18 multiple-choice questions and seven, short written questions. The minimum pass mark for the exam is 81%.​

SMSTS-R certificate

On successful completion of the SMSTS-R online course, you’ll be awarded an SMSTS certificate. This demonstrates your competency in safely managing construction sites in accordance with CITB standards.

How long does an SMSTS certificate last?

An SMSTS certificate lasts for five years before it needs to be renewed.

Applicants must hold a valid Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) certification. Every five years, this will need to be renewed. If you are ready to renew, then our refresher course is for you.

You will also need be competent in English and must also have access to a computer with a broadband internet connection and a camera.

How many days is the SMSTS-R course?

The SMSTS-R course will run for two consecutive days. You will be required to renew your certificate every five years.

Can you do an SMSTS-R course online?

Yes, the course can be booked online and training with be carried out remotely via Zoom. The course will cover the same modules as it would if it were carried out face-to-face and it will be led by a CITB-qualified instructor virtually.

How much does the SMSTS-R course cost?

The two-day course costs £240 (excl. VAT) per attendee.

What is the CITB Grants Scheme?

The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) pays grants for the achievement of approved short-duration courses – this includes the Site Supervision Training Scheme (SSSTS) and SSSTS Refresher, Site Manager Safety Training (SMSTS) and Health & Safety Awareness (HSA).

The Grants Scheme is funded by Industry through the CITB Levy and aims to ensure these funds are invested in core construction skills to meet Industry needs. You can apply for your grant using their online form.

Who can claim this grant?

You can claim grants if you are an employer registered with CITB and send a Levy Return to CITB by 30 November each year. Small employers that don’t need to pay the levy can still claim grants.

Providing the person is working for you at the time of their training, you can apply for grants for SMSTS courses undertaken by:

  • Directly employed staff
  • Subcontractors
