Allenbuild adopt Safety Schemes in Procurement

Allenbuild recently announced that they have adopted a Safety Schemes in Procurement (SSIP) approach to Health and Safety Assessments; and are now working with Safety Management Advisory Services (SMAS) to manage sub-contractor H&S Stage 1 requirements on their behalf.

As set out in the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, Client organisations such as Allenbuild have a duty to ensure that anyone appointed or engaged to work on any construction project, has the necessary skills, knowledge, experience and, where relevant, the organisational capability to do so.

This means that they must make reasonable pre-qualification enquiries to check that the organisation or individual is competent to do the relevant work and can allocate adequate resources to it.

An effective solution to Pre-Qualification

By adopting an SSIP approach to health and safety pre-qualification checks, Allenbuild can meet the above requirements and is able to save their sub-contractors both time and money by reducing the need for multiple assessments.

By gaining a H&S certificate issued by an SSIP Member Scheme, contractors can demonstrate that they meet the H&S pre-qualification requirements set out in the CDM 2015. They can then use that certificate to demonstrate this to other Clients too. Adopting an SSIP approach also means that for those contractors working with Allenbuild who already have an SSIP certification, they can simply verify this with SMAS rather than having to undergo another full assessment.

In addition, by partnering with SMAS, all Allenbuild sub-contractors are all held in one database where they are able to monitor contractors that are currently working with them (where they are at risk), via the unique SMAS ‘site-builder’ function. This allows Allenbuild to focus their resources on Stage 2 and on-site assessments.

The SMAS client portal also enables Allenbuild to easily manage outgoing communications to its contractors; enabling them to send real-time email notifications which range from safety alerts for those onsite, to making contractors aware of new tender opportunities and requirements.

Added value to contractors

Contractors need to adhere to H&S pre-qualification checks but by becoming a member of SMAS also receive ‘best value’ services which include:

– 3-5-day turnaround on assessments

  • direct assistance throughout the process
  • automatic reminder service each year
  • inclusion on the SMAS supplier database, providing visibility to Construction companies across the UK
