By far the most common risk when working in construction is falling from a height. Tragically, around 30 people die as a result of falls from a height every year.

Construction workers regularly need to work high off the ground, whether they’re setting up scaffolding, building rooftops, or climbing up and down ladders. The danger increases when a worker’s mobility is restricted by confined spaces or when the proper training hasn’t been provided.

It’s crucial for site managers to make sure anyone required to work from a height is fully trained and equipped with the right personal protective equipment (PPE). This includes hard hats and harnesses, securing guardrails, and setting up safety nets when necessary.

2. Trips and falls

Working outside in bad weather (which we’re no strangers to in the UK) can easily lead to slipping. Exposure to heavy vibrations when operating machinery is a silent but serious danger that impacts around 2 million people across all sectors in the UK.

Prolonged use of power tools, jackhammers, and ground-working equipment can cause Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS), commonly referred to as ‘White Finger’ or ‘Blue Finger’.

This condition impacts the blood vessels, nerves, and joints in the hands and arms, leading to painful tingling, numbness, and a loss of grip strength. However, it’s fully preventable with effective risk assessments to spot potential causes, strict limits on how long a worker uses vibrating machinery, and anti-vibration PPE.

7. Respiratory diseases

While they might be invisible, airborne hazards are still incredibly dangerous. There are an estimated 5,000 workers suffering from a work-related breathing or lung problem in the construction industry, which is significantly higher than in all other industries.

Tasks like drilling, sawing, and grinding produce fine dust particles that are small enough to be deeply inhaled. Over time, this can cause conditions like occupational asthma or severe allergic reactions. That’s why it’s essential to make sure your team wears proper face protection, like Filtering Facepiece (FFP) masks, when drilling or cutting materials.

Another serious respiratory risk is inhaling chemical fumes from products like wet cement, paints, and wood treatments. Wearing a respirator significantly reduces the risk of chemical inhalation, helping you combat respiratory risks and prevent long-term illnesses like silicosis and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

8. Asbestos

Also known as the ‘hidden killer’, asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral made mostly of silicon and oxygen. Thanks to its strength and fire resistance, it was once widely used in construction. However, we now know that inhaling its microscopic fibres causes devastating chronic and often terminal health problems.

Tragically, around 5,000 workers in the UK die from asbestos-related health concerns each year, and roughly 20 tradesmen die every week as a result of past exposure.

While many assume it’s a thing of the past, asbestos can still be found in any building built or refurbished before the year 2000. 

A report from the British Safety Council in 2024 estimated that there is still asbestos in around “1.5 million UK buildings, including 500,000 workplaces and 75 per cent of schools and hospitals”. Whilst the number of asbestos-related deaths is gradually decreasing, it’s still essential that teams remain vigilant.

When disturbed, it leads to several fatal conditions, including:

  • Mesothelioma — A type of cancer that develops in the lining of the body’s organs, most commonly the lungs.
  • Asbestos-related lung cancer — Lung cancer that’s directly linked to inhaling harmful asbestos fibres over time.
  • Asbestosis — A serious, long-term lung condition that causes heavy scarring to your lung tissue, making it difficult to breathe.
  • Pleural thickening — A condition where the lining of the lung swells and thickens, which squeezes the lungs and causes severe shortness of breath.

Before tackling any demolition or refurbishment, make sure you carefully prepare your workspace. This includes carrying out sample tests to identify where asbestos might be, isolating the work area, and making sure everyone on site wears full-face respirators, gloves, and protective overalls.

9. Electrocution

Electrocution happens when a person on site comes into contact with an electrical source, causing a dangerous current to flow through their body. Alarmingly, HSE receives around 1000 reports of electrical accidents at work each year, of which about 25 are fatal.

Common causes of electrocution include:

  • Hitting overhead power lines with tall machinery
  • Working with frayed or damaged tools
  • Striking hidden underground wires during excavation
  • Using electrical equipment in wet conditions

Here are seven simple but highly effective ways you can reduce the risk to your workers, focusing on the standard hierarchy of hazard control:

1. Elimination

The first step in managing Health & Safety in construction is to identify potential hazards and eliminate them at the source wherever possible. Ask yourself: is there a way you can complete the task using a different method, or use different materials to remove the hazard completely?

By removing hazards from the start, you enhance safety and create a more efficient work environment.

A few ways you might eliminate risk include:

  • Using extendable tools instead of working at height.
  • Ordering materials pre-cut to size to eliminate the dust and physical risks associated with cutting on-site.
  • Opting for battery-operated equipment to remove trip hazards caused by long trailing power cords completely.

2. Substitution

If the risks can’t be removed entirely — which is often the case in construction — the next best option is to make substitutions wherever possible. This means replacing a dangerous material or process with a safer alternative, helping to protect workers’ health while keeping the project moving.

These could include:

  • Replacing wobbly ladders with stable scaffolding.
  • Wearing high-visibility jackets to enhance pedestrian visibility near moving vehicles.
  • Substituting highly toxic chemicals with water-based or non-hazardous alternatives.
  • Upgrading to the latest, safest equipment rather than relying on outdated tools.

3. Engineering controls

Another effective method to reduce risk is by using engineering to control the environment you’re working in.

These controls can be permanent solutions for routine tasks or temporary measures for specialised jobs. Crucially, they focus on protecting the entire group of workers, rather than just individuals, making them more effective in preventing widespread accidents.

These could include:

  • Adding sturdy edge protection while working at height.
  • Enclosing loud equipment or sharp machinery edges with physical guards.
  • Installing local exhaust ventilation (LEV) extractors to instantly remove dust or toxic chemical fumes from the air.

4. Policies and procedures

Having rules in place is great, but they’re only effective if your staff actually know how to follow them. Clear policies provide the guidance employees need on how to perform tasks safely and handle hazardous situations.

It’s also important to regularly update your Health & Safety documents to make sure it still aligns with your processes. For example, if a new piece of heavy machinery arrives, the fresh safety protocols need to be communicated to all relevant staff quickly to avoid confusion and accidental non-compliance.
